Do Not Disturb iPhone text message

Do you have a person in your Contacts you'd like to silence for a while? You can turn on Do Not Disturb mode on your iPhone for individual contacts without them being notified. We'll cover how to put someone on Do Not Disturb, while still receiving other needed notifications and messages.

What Is Do Not Disturb on iPhone? What about Focus Mode?

Do Not Disturb is part of a larger set of Focus modes that allow you to customize which notifications, calls, and messages you receive. If you're looking to silence a group of contacts or apps, learning how to turn on a Focus mode can be your best option. If needed, you can also block a number if you no longer want to hear from a specific contact. However, sometimes you simply need to know how to mute notifications for a contact or a specific message thread. In this case, follow the steps below to learn how to mute a contact on iPhone.

How to Turn Do Not Disturb On for an Individual Contact

  1. Open the Messages app and tap the conversation you want to silence.

  2. Tap the arrow next to the contact's name.

  3. Toggle on Hide Alerts. 

  4. Tap Done.

  5. Now you'll see an alarm bell with a slash to the right of the thread in Messages. (For iOS 15 and earlier, you'll see a crescent moon indicating that notifications are silenced.)

It's important to note that all Message notifications from this contact will be muted until you turn off Do Not Disturb for this contact. 

How to Turn Off Do Not Disturb for a Contact

Here’s how to turn off Do Not Disturb on your iPhone, so you can receive notifications from the contact. 

  1. Swipe left on the conversation in Messages.

  2. Tap the purple alarm bell icon to turn on alerts again.

iPhone & iPad: How to use Do Not Disturb for Messages

  1. Open the Messages app on iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap into the message thread in question.
  3. In iOS 11 or earlier tap the i icon in the top right. In iOS 12 or later, tap the avatars at the top to show more details and then tap info.
  4. Flip the switch next to Hide Alerts.

DND for Messages is a great tool if there’s a specific thread (single or group) that is sending way too many notifications while you’re busy. Unlike leaving a group message, you can still reply and interact after enabling this feature.

What does Do Not Disturb do on iPhone text message?

With Focus in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 or later, you can use Do Not Disturb to silence calls, alerts, and notifications that you get while your device is locked. You can also schedule Do Not Disturb and allow calls from certain people.

What happens to text messages during Do Not Disturb?

Will You Still Get Texts on Do Not Disturb? Yes, you will continue receiving texts. Do Not Disturb mode on iOS and Android prevents notifications from making noise or appearing on screen. It does not block incoming text messages or phone calls.

Does Do Not Disturb on iPhone allow text messages?

Go to Settings > Focus and tap any of the categories, like Do Not Disturb, Driving, or Sleep. Under Allowed Notifications, you can choose settings separately for People and Apps.
