How do I activate Office 365 on my Android tablet for free?

Your installation may vary depending on the Android device you have and the Office 365 app you choose to install (however they all require your UMBC email address to license). If you are unable to install Office 365 apps on your Android device using the instructions below, you can try these alternate instructions

  1. Go to the Google Play Store and search for Microsoft Office 365.

  2. From the search results, either select the specific Microsoft Office app you want (Microsoft Word, for example). These instructions illustrate how to install the Microsoft Office bundle that includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 

  3. Press Install.

     

  4. When the install completes, press Open.

  5. Press ALLOW (if you press DENY, Microsoft prevents you from using the app).

  6. Press Get Started.

  7. Press Next.

  8. Press DON'T SEND OPTIONAL DATA.

  9. Press CLOSE.

  10. Press CONNECT YOUR ACCOUNT.

  11. Type in your UMBC email address and then press Next

  12. Sign in to myUMBC. 

          

    13. The installation is complete and you can now create and edit documents on your Android device.

Install and Setup

  1. Log in using your MIT Kerberos ID.
  2. Open the app and follow the on-screen setup instructions. The setup process will lead you to a "Sign In" box.

  3. Enter your MIT email address ("") and click Next. If prompted, select Work Account.

  4. Result: You will be redirected to the Touchstone Login page.
    Enter your Kerberos username and your password and click Login.

  5. Result: You will be shown a quick loading screen and prompted to connect to a storage location

Dropbox as a storage location

All MIT students, staff and faculty can connect to the MIT Dropbox team.  To find more about signing up for the MIT dropbox team account, please see [MIT Dropbox FAQ]

# Make sure you have an active Dropbox account.  IS&T recommends using a MIT Dropbox team account over a personal account.

  1. Click Connect to my Dropbox.
    1. Depending on whether you have the Dropbox app installed, you will either be prompted by the app to authorize Office Mobile or you will be redirected to the Dropbox webpage to login
    2. If you have both a personal and MIT team account, you will be prompted for which account to connect.
