SANTA CRUZ, California — Damion Lee was shaking with excitement after learning he would play for USA Basketball just like his future brother-in-law, NBA All-Star Stephen Curry, once did.

USA Basketball told Lee on Feb. 16 that he was a replacement candidate for the FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying team. After guard Marcus Thornton signed a 10-day contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Lee got the call from USA Basketball director Sean Ford on Feb. 21 that he would be added to the roster. Just as excited to get the news was Lee’s fiancée, Sydel Curry, Stephen Curry’s sister.

“He was shaking and I said, ‘What is wrong with you? Are you OK?’ ” Sydel Curry said. “He said, ‘I got the call, I got the call.’ I was like, ‘What?’ He said, ‘I got to go now. I got to go. I got to go. I have to be there in like two hours.’

“It was a huge ‘maybe.’ It was a huge ‘if.’ So when he got the call, he was really excited.”

Lee, a guard with the G League’s Santa Cruz Warriors, was about 60 miles away in Oakland when he got the call. Ford told Lee to get to Santa Cruz as soon as possible so he could get settled that night to prepare for his lone practice on Feb. 22 before play began in Kaiser Permanente Arena.

Lee’s USA Basketball career likely will last just two games, a win over Cuba on Feb. 23 and a game against Puerto Rico on Monday (11 p.m. EST, ESPN). Team USA is expected to use young NBA players in the third window of World Cup qualifying at Mexico on June 28 and at Cuba on July 1. Even so, Lee is honored to play for the USA and can now say he was a member of the national team.

“It actually meant a lot,” the 25-year-old Lee said. “I’m playing with USA on my chest. I’m playing for the team that I have been watching since I was younger. It really just means everything playing for this country.

“This jersey is definitely something I am going to frame in our house whenever we get it. It’s big. Real big.”

Stephen Curry won a gold medal while playing for USA Basketball’s FIBA World Cup team in 2010 and 2014. The Golden State Warriors guard was very excited that Lee had a chance to play for USA and congratulated him after he landed the assignment. Coincidentally, both Stephen Curry and Lee have worn No. 4 for USA Basketball.

“It’s a great experience for him to get some recognition for the type of player he is,” Stephen Curry said. “It’s kind of cool that the G League guys get the opportunity to get that exposure. For him, it is just a confidence building coming back from his knee injuries, knowing that he is really working hard to get his body right. His game is coming along with his flow and rhythm.

“He can take that to a USA experience, shock the game a little bit. We will see how he responds.”

Lee received some advice from Stephen Curry about playing for Team USA.

“He basically told me to have fun and enjoy it,” Lee said. “What was funny is I didn’t know this until [Feb. 23] that he actually wore No. 4. It’s coincidental. It’s pretty funny.”

The USA Basketball assignment is a boost for Lee, who has faced his challenges in recent years.

Lee suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while playing at Drexel University in 2013. He transferred to the University of Louisville for his senior season in 2015. After going undrafted in 2016, the 6-foot-6 combo guard played in two preseason games for the Boston Celtics. He joined the Maine Red Claws of the then-D-League but suffered another season-ending torn ACL. Santa Cruz acquired Lee in a three-team trade on Aug. 24, 2017. He is averaging 14.8 points and 4.8 rebounds in 28.6 minutes per game in 32 contests this season and said he is still working to regain his explosion and quickness from before the knee surgeries.

Lee said he has been receiving some interest from NBA teams and hopes to be called up from Santa Cruz this season.

“There is hope. But my main goal entering this season is staying healthy throughout and showing teams, showing organizations that I have durability and I can be healthy throughout the course of a year,” Lee said.

Stephen Curry and his brother, injured Dallas Mavericks guard Seth Curry, both spent time last offseason helping Lee develop his game. Lee said that both “preach” to stay confident and continue to get better daily, and that his unselfish play doesn’t go unnoticed and is always needed in the NBA. Lee added that he regularly reaches out to them for advice.

Stephen Curry believes that with continued development, Lee will end up in the NBA.

“He just has a high IQ for the game,” Curry said. “He can shoot the crap out of the ball. He is just a smart player for his size. Playing 2 guard, I think he can transition really well to a bunch of different systems in the league. Obviously, it is unfortunate the injury he had last season.

“For him to fight through that, get his body right where he is out there every game playing, getting his rhythm and then working his way back into some GMs’ boards this summer for next season, he will be right where he wants to be.”

Said Lee: “I appreciate having brothers that are willing to help.”

The Curry brothers and Lee bonded over basketball. Stephen Curry is excited about the “solid guy” joining his family.

“We spent a lot of time together last summer working out and getting to know each other,” Stephen Curry said. “Solid guy that appreciates everything he’s worked for. He’s been given an opportunity to make a name for himself in the game. He has a good head on his shoulders and understands how to carry himself. That’s all you can really ask for a guy who is soon to be into the family.”

Lee asked Sydel Curry to marry him in November 2017. She regularly attends her fiancé’s games in Santa Cruz and was on hand to see him score three points in 20 minutes during USA’s 84-48 rout of Cuba. Not long after the game was over, Lee shared some words with his future wife, and they also shared a kiss before he headed into USA’s locker room.

“My fiancée, I love her. She is amazing. She is very supportive,” Lee said. “She doesn’t judge me for anything other than who I am.”

If there was anything close to a "First family" of the NBA, it would probably be the Currys.

Two-time league MVP Stephen Curry's star might shine the brightest, but he is just one member of a family that could be described as basketball royalty. 

The son of 16-year NBA veteran Dell Curry, Stephen Curry's reputation as a second-generation basketball star has long preceded him, even prior to his days in the NBA. Stephen Curry's dad: Dell Curry

3-point shooting must be genetic. While Stephen Curry is now recognized as the greatest shooter in NBA history, his father, Dell, built a reputation as a 3-point marksman during his 16-year NBA career.

After being selected by the Jazz with the 15th overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft, Dell Curry spent one season with the Cavaliers, 10 seasons with the Hornets, a season with the Bucks and three with the Raptors.

Dell Curry enjoyed a fruitful NBA career in which he averaged 11.7 points on 40.2 percent 3-point shooting over 1,083 career games. The elder Curry was named Sixth Man of the Year in the 1993-94 NBA season after averaging a career-high 16.3 points while appearing in all 82 games for the Hornets.

20 years after retiring from the NBA, Dell Curry is now the television analyst for the Hornets, but it's no surprise to see him on hand at either of his son's games, like when he was courtside at Madison Square Garden to watch Stephen become the league's all-time 3-point leader.

Stephen Curry's mom: Sonya Curry

Stephen Curry's mom didn't play basketball, but she was an all-conference performer during her time as a member of Virginia Tech's volleyball team.

It was at Virginia Tech that Sonya and Dell met. The two married in 1988.

Sonya Curry is also a mainstay at Warriors games, including Game 6 of the Western Conference Semifinals, from which she shared video of the celebration from her seats at San Francisco's Chase Center.

In addition to being a former college athlete and Curry's mom, Sonya Curry is an educator and the founder of the Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman in North Carolina. In May, she released her memoir, "Fierce Love: A Memoir of Family, Faith and Purpose."

Sonya and Dell announced their divorce in 2021. Together, they have two children in addition to Stephen, his brother, Seth and sister, Sydel.

Stephen Curry's wife: Ayesha Curry

Stephen Curry and Ayesha were married in the summer of 2011, but the two first met when they were teenagers.

The two began dating during Stephen Curry's college years at Davidson College, where he attended school from 2006 to 2009.

A former actress, Ayesha Curry played a number of minor roles, including parts in singular episodes of Disney's "Hannah Montana" and "Good Luck Charlie."

An entrepreneur, Ayesha Curry has also used her culinary skills to host shows such as "Cooking with the Currys," "Ayesha's Homemade" and "The Great American Baking Show," which she hosted for one season.

Together, Ayesha and Stephen Curry host the couples' game show "About Last Night" on HBO Max.

They have three children: daughters Riley (born 2012) and Ryan (born 2015) and son Canon (born 2018).

Canon, who is three years old, presented his dad with an All-Star ring at the Chase Center in February.

Stephen Curry's brother: Seth Curry

What was that about 3-point shooting being genetic?

The younger brother of Stephen, Seth Curry took quite a different path to the NBA. After going undrafted in 2013 and struggling to find the right fit in the league, Seth Curry is now an eight-year veteran in the NBA.

This past season, Seth Curry averaged 15.0 points over 64 games with the 76ers (45) and Nets (19). For his career, Seth Curry shoots 43.9 percent from 3-point range, a better career mark than that of both Dell and Stephen.

Seth Curry is married to Callie Rivers, the sister of Nuggets guard Austin Rivers and the daughter of 76ers head coach Doc Rivers, adding to the Curry family ties around the NBA.

Seth and Callie Curry have two daughters, Cash and Carter.

Stephen Curry's sister: Sydel Curry-Lee

The youngest of the Curry family is Stephen Curry's sister, Sydel Curry-Lee.

Like her mother, Sydel was a standout volleyball player, spending three seasons as a setter at Elon College in Elon, N.C.

Sydel Curry-Lee is doubly invested in the success of the Warriors. In addition to her older brother playing for the team, she is married to reserve guard Damion Lee, who is in his fourth season with the franchise.

Over 63 games with the Warriors during the 2021-22 season, Lee averaged 7.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. He appeared in 12 of the Warriors' 16 games ahead of the 2022 NBA Finals.

Together, they have a son, Daxon Wardell-Xavier Lee.
