The sum of two numbers is 24 so we have: X + Y = 24

The 2nd number is 6 less than the first so:  Y = X-6

Replace Y with X-6 in the first equation giving:

Now find Y which is X - 6 ...  Y = 15 - 6 = 9

The two numbers are 15, 9

I have to get two equations and solve to get X and y but I dont no how to get the equations to find x and y please help.

This is a simultaneous equation.

If you add the equations, i,e

(x + y) + (x -y) = 24+16 = 40

Now solving for x you get,

Once you get the value of x, then it becomes easy to find y. I leave that to you.

Let's assume the two numbers are x and y

Adding (1) and (2)  x+y=24

                      =>   x  =20   dividing both sides by 2

Substituting 20 for x in (1), 20+y=24

                                 =>        y=4 .... subtracting 20 from both sides

Hence, the two numbers are 20 and 4.

substitute to 1st equation: X + 4 = 24 so X = 24-4 and X = 20

so to check: 20+4 = 24  and 20-4 = 16
