Your telephone's Mute button allows you to turn off the microphone so that the caller can't hear you, but you can still hear the caller. In some cases, this works only when you are on a hands-free call. To place a call on mute for all telephone models:

  1. Press your telephone's Mute button. You can hear your caller but your caller cannot hear you. In many cases, the light next to the Mute button flashes.
  2. To speak with your caller, press your telephone's Mute button again. Each time you press the Mute button, you switch between regular mode and mute.

Caller ID telephones

On Caller ID telephones, the mute feature works only when you are on a hands-free call.

The Listen on Hold feature allows you to place the handset in the cradle while on hold and use the speaker to hear when the calling party returns to the conversation.

Lets you know when you’re talking while muted. Tap the alert to quickly unmute and make sure your voice is heard." It's important to note that after testing with others, we were able to confirm that they're unable to hear the mute alert on their end.

The ability to host or participate in a conference call from almost anywhere is a technological advantage that allows for convenient interaction with your clients or employees. Calls taken in noisy locations, however – such as at home with the kids around, a crowded café or even a busy office – can disrupt the conversation for everyone. Muting your cellphone or landline allows the meeting to proceed without any audible distractions.

Silencing Your Phone

Muting most cellphones and landlines requires just a single push of the mute button. The button location can vary by phone. It's usually on the keypad on landlines – tap it to mute and when the call is finished, tap it again to return to normal operating mode. The mute button on cellphones is also usually located on the keypad and requires only a tap to activate. On iPhones, for example, you can hit the microphone icon on the keypad to silence your side of the call, then touch it again when you want to add to the conversation. If you're unable to locate the mute button on your phone, press *6 (Star 6) and this should mute the call.

Tip

If you're using a headset, muting it can serve as an alternative to muting your phone. The mute button is usually located near the volume and on/off controls.

When You're the Host

When you host a conference call with a large number of participants, there's always the risk that someone will forget to mute their phone and disrupt the meeting with background noise. Many conference call services allow the host to mute the phones of everyone calling into the meeting. For example, AT&T’s TeleConference Services requires that the host push 8 on her phone to do this after she activates the call. The function is disabled for each attendee when he hangs up.

Warning

Muting all participants works best during a presentation or training call where the attendees don't have to participate in the conversation.

If you’ve ever been on a conference call, you’ll appreciate the importance of the ‘mute’ button – just because you can’t see the people on the other end of the call it doesn’t mean you can’t hear them, or that they can’t hear you.

And so the mute button comes in handy to mask everything from eating during a lunchtime conference call to an unavoidable coughing fit. It can also help to mask the myriad of other things you could be doing while on a conference call.

What are you doing while on that conference call?

If you don’t mute a conference call, people can hear exactly what type of multitasking is going on. But it can be much worse if you don’t turn the camera off while video calling – as one woman found out in the worst way possible (check the far left window).

You’re dong what?!

It’s no secret that people will busy themselves with other tasks while on a conference call – if we could be doing other work without fear of reprisal while in boardroom meetings I’m sure we would – but what are the most common things people do during a teleconference?

A study from InterCall found that while doing other work was something almost two-thirds (65%) of people do while on a conference call, over half (55%) admitted to eating or making food.

Alarmingly, almost half (47%) admit to going to the bathroom while on a conference call – taking ‘hand-free’ to a whole other level!

Texting (44%) and social media (43%) also featured high up the list, while a quarter (25%) somehow managed to play video games while on a business call – if GTA V is the game in question that could make for an interesting exchange if you miss the mute button.

Just over a quarter (27%) also admitted to falling asleep while on a conference call.

You’re calling from where?!

As well as finding out how people multi-task while on a conference call, the study also looked at the strange places people have conducted calls from. Here are some of the best…

Mobile technology is one of the main reasons people can dial-in from any location that has a strong enough signal and dialling in to a conference call from a smartphone is growing ever more popular among remote workers, rising from 19.4% in 2011 to 21.2% in 2013.

One of the study’s stranger findings – the number of people calling from the bathroom aside – was that 80% of respondents are more likely to mute themselves when using a mobile device rather than a landline.

Why do people hit the mute button?

The majority (69%) do it to simply eliminate background noise, while almost two-thirds (65%) do so to talk to someone else. Half (50%)  will hit mute when visiting the bathroom (so the other half don’t?!), over a third (33%) do so to eat or make food, while 18% hit mute to make another call.

Can someone tell if you mute on a call?

How do you know? - Unless you are on a multi cast conferencing system with a user interface, there is no way to knowing if your call is on mute. When you start the call listen to and focus on the background sound. When the mute is ON, the background sound would not be heard anymore.

Can people hear the mute sound?

Please note that, when you mute a phone call, the other person should not be hearing the mute alert on their end. If the other person is hearing the mute alert on their end, then that means that the Phone app might not be working as expected.

What does mute mean on iPhone call?

Muting your iPhone prevents the people to whom you're speaking from hearing any sound from your end. This resolves any sound issues, especially if you're listening to a conference call with a large number of people or when you know you won't be speaking for long periods of time.

Can people hear the mute button?

No, the only ways that you can be heard are: Giving input directly into a voice chat. Being in a DM or group chat call. Having your audio be played through separate media (videos, livestreams, other people hearing you and being unmuted, etc.)
