How to Make 3D post on Facebook

How to Post a Facebook 3D Photo

Facebook 3D Photos are quickly gaining in popularity. Not only do they show a more realistic reproduction of the photo’s subject than a standard 2D photo, but their high movement and interactive nature make them great at collecting likes and comments on your social media posts.

A Step-By-Step Guide To Sharing Your 3D Photo on Facebook

Unfortunately, the sharing process for 3D Photo is slightly more complicated than posting a regular 2D photo, but with a little instruction, anyone can be shooting and sharing 3D Photos on Facebook in no time! So, let’s get started!

Step 1: Take Your 3D Photo

If you have a newer phone with multiple cameras on the back, you can most likely take and share 3D Photos on Facebook without any special apps. (Let’s call these Native 3D Phones.)

Phones with this built-in 3D Photo capability include, but are not limited to the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max, along with several Android devices, including the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9+, Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10 5G, and Galaxy Fold.

If your phone is not on the list, that’s no problem! An app, called LucidPix, allows your single-camera Android or iOS smartphone to both capture and share 3D Photos on Facebook.

Native 3D Phone Owners:

To shoot a 3D Photo, you must be in the correct camera mode. In most cases, this means opening the camera app that came with your phone, selecting the correct mode, and then taking your picture like normal.

  • Apple iPhone: Use the camera app and select Portrait mode
  • Google Pixel: Use the camera app and choose Menu, then Portrait
  • Samsung Galaxy: Use the camera app and choose Live Focus
  • Nokia: Use the camera app and select Live Bokeh

If you own a phone that is not on the list above, or does not have dual rear cameras, you’re not out of luck! With a new app, called LucidPix, you can shoot lifelike 3D photos with just a single lens. How, you ask? LucidPix uses advanced artificial intelligence to add depth to your photos.

Clear as mud, right? Without getting too technical, it simply looks at the photo and processes it like the human brain, separating out things in the foreground from things in the background. Even better, it’s super easy to capture a 3D Photo with LucidPix and requires no user input to make it 3D.

How to shoot a 3D Photo in LucidPix:

Step 2: Share Your 3D Photo On Facebook

If you own one of the listed Native 3D Phones above, or you see the “3D” icon on LucidPix photos when selecting photos in Facebook, the process is usually quite simple:

  • Open up the Facebook app on your phone
  • Start a new post at the top of the screen
  • Find your photo by tapping the Photo button
  • Choose your 3D photo by looking for the thumbnail with the 3D icon on it and selecting it
  • Tap the “Make 3D” button and give Facebook a moment to process (don’t forget this step, or your photo will not post in 3D!)
  • Once you’ve “Made 3D” and written your comment, tap post like normal, sit back, and enjoy all the ooohs and ahhhs!

For those of us without “native” phones, or for those that don’t see the 3D icon in their photo library when posting a 3D Photo in Facebook, the process is a little bit different. Please note: Some of these steps will be done for you by the LucidPix app, but full instructions are provided just in case you need them.

  • Take your 3D Photo in LucidPix (explained above)
  • Tap the Share button, then tap Facebook 3D Photo, then tap Share with Facebook Website
  • Visit Facebook.com via your web browser of choice, including Chrome, Safari, etc. (This should be done automatically)
  • Tap What’s On Your Mind to start a post (This should be done automatically)
  • Tap Photo and navigate to the LucidPix folder (Or Browse, if done automatically)
  • Select the regular color 2D image in the LucidPix folder
  • Tap Photo again and navigate to the LucidPix folder (Or Browse, if done automatically)
  • Select the black and white Depth Map image in the LucidPix folder
  • If there is a “Make 3D” button, be sure to tap it to tell Facebook to display your photo in 3D
  • Type your comments and post your 3D Photo to Facebook
  • Sit back, and enjoy all the ooohs and ahhhs!

Congratulations, you’ve now successfully shared a 3D Photo with your friends and family on Facebook. Don’t forget to use hashtags #LucidPix and #BetterIn3D when posting!

How does 3D work on Facebook?

In essence, 3D photo technology takes the subject in the foreground and measures it against whatever is in the background. This data is then used to create an accurate depth map and, when combined with Facebook's custom software, gives photos movement and depth when you scroll past them in News Feed.

Does Facebook still have 3D photos?

Everyone on Facebook can already view 3D photos in their news feeds with the Facebook mobile app or with Oculus VR headsets. But only iPhone users can create and share 3D photos on Facebook. There's no word yet when Android users will get the ability.
